House insurance

Home insurance prices vary widely, so taking the time to shop around to find the best home insurance policy for you is well worth it. Make sure you compare buildings and contents insurance across the market before making a final decision.

This will help you understand what you need to take into account when looking for home insurance.

Overview

Uinsure was the first major GI provider to utilise a panel of B&C insurers via a common policy wording. Our panel offering has been continuously refined and currently consists of Ageas, AXA, RSA and Fortress, all of whom share a common policy wording to simplify your compliance procedures.

With 99% postcode coverage, our panel product by design is suitable for the vast majority of clients who require protection for their possessions. High cover limits are teamed with a low policy excess to provide a quality product which is supported by UK based customer service and claims teams. Cover can be arranged and confirmed within minutes based upon the simplest question set and application process in the marketplace.

Who are defaqto

Defaqto is a leading UK independent financial research company.

They independently rate over 500 car and home insurance policies. Their ratings range from one to five stars. Their Star Ratings are designed to help customers identify where a product or policy sits in the market in terms of the features and benefits it offers and the range of options available. Their in-depth Star Ratings process looks at the key features and benefits of every product or policy they rate.

Defaqto are completely independent and unbiased and never knowingly exclude a product or policy from their Star Ratings.

Why is a Defaqto 5 Star Rating important?

Buying home insurance can be a bit of a minefield, whilst its easy to compare products on price alone, its not always easy to understand what you’re getting for your money until its too late.

Defaqto Star Ratings help you to make informed decisions about getting the cover to suit your needs. A Defaqto 5 Star Rating gives you the reassurance that you’re buying quality cover that will deliver when you need it most.

Optional Extras

Buildings Accidental Damage
Included as standard within buildings insurance is accidental breakage to fixed glass and ceramic hobs built into cookers that are permanent fixtures in your home, sanitary fixtures and fittings in your home; and solar panels.

Available as an optional extra is Accidental damage cover. This covers unexpected and unintended damage caused by something sudden and external. Accidental damage would be required in order to claim for events that are not covered under the accidental breakage benefit. An example of this would be putting your foot through a ceiling whilst in the loft where purchasing accidental damage would be required to make a claim.

Contents Accidental Damage
When taking contents insurance you are automatically covered for breakage to televisions (and their aerials) video and audio installations, satellite dishes, receivers or decoders, games consoles or desktop. Accidents caused by children are also included, so if your toddler manages to push over the TV and cracks the screen they will be covered under this section.

For an additional premium though, you can add the accidental damage optional cover to your policy. Accidental damage cover is designed to insure your contents against damage caused by unintended mishaps, such as spilling wine on a carpet, knocking over an ornament or burning a sofa with a cigarette.

Personal Possessions
Items your clients take outside your home are not covered automatically for loss, theft or damage by our contents insurance.

If you want to insure everyday items your clients take outside like mobile phones, watches, jewellery, laptops or pedal cycles they’d need to add personal belongings cover.

Their personal belongings will be protected anywhere in Europe, and for up to 60 days worldwide during any period of cover, so they'd be insured if they went on holiday.

There is a single article limit of £2,500 but individual limits apply for mobile phones (£500), personal money (£750), credit cards (£1,000) and pedal cycles (max any one cycle £1,000).

Items worth over £2,500 (or pedal cycles over £1,000) need to be individually listed via the quotation system. Cover for specified personal belongings is available up to £15,000.

Home Emergency Cover
Home Emergency Cover provides immediate assistance from professional tradesman to deal with a range of emergency incidents around the home that need resolving as soon as possible.

The policy provides cover up to £1500 (inc VAT) per claim with no annual maximum limit on claims and costs just £4 per month.

Family Legal Protection
Our Family Legal Protection policy provides £150,000 of legal cover and is designed to help customers through difficult and often stressful legal situations.

Cover costs just £2.75 per month

Simply adding Family Legal Protection to the household policy gives your client the peace of mind of knowing that if a legal problem occurs, solicitors will support them through the process by giving expert assistance on the best way to resolve the situation.

How to reduce the cost of home insurance?

If you don’t take reasonable care to answer truthfully and accurately when buying the policy, any claim you make might not be valid.

Increase security: some insurers will only insure you if you have BSI approved locks on all outside doors and windows. Most insurers will help you work out which locks you already have. You might also get a reduction for joining your local Neighborhood Watch scheme and installing security lighting.

Install alarms: smoke and burglar alarms are both important. Make sure they’re approved models – a NACOSS alarm (National Approvals Council for Security Systems) could earn you a discount on your premiums (although what you save in lower premiums is unlikely to cover the cost of the alarm).

Increase the excess on your policy: If you’re happy to cover a bit more of the cost of a claim yourself, your premiums might be lowered.

Build your no-claims discount: If you don’t claim for a few years you might get a discount, but not all companies offer this, so check before you buy.

Buy buildings and contents insurance together: you might get a discount if you get both from the same company. Also, if there’s a fire, or something else that affects both the building and your possessions, it might be less hassle if it’s all managed by the same insurer.

Pay annually: monthly premiums can cost more. There’s usually an extra 6% charge to pay. Though some insurers will allow payment by installments for no extra charges so it’s worth shopping around.

Take advantage of offers: some insurers guarantee to beat any quote (or the renewal of your current policy) by up to 10%, on a like-for-like basis.

Sadly, there are some things you can’t change – your postcode is one of them.

If you live in a high claim area (at risk from theft, flood, or subsidence) you’ll have higher premiums.
